Parish Council
We can all agree with the Prince of Wales's recent statement
that the lack of affordable housing is one of the most pressing
issued facing rural communities. Certainly it was identified
as a problem in our Honington & Sapiston Village Plan.
Our Council has now taken up the matter with Suffolk ACRE,
the body appointed by the Government to identify and help
to solve local housing needs. To qualify for help, we have
to undertake a thorough survey of all the houses in the villages.
Forms will be distributed to every household in September
and the Council are asking for everyone to help by completing
their form and returning it to Suffolk ACRE for analysis.
The form is totally confidential; you do not have to identify
yourself and help is available if you have problems completing
it. This is a major Community Initiative. You may not have
a housing problem yourself but, by completing the form, you
could help a neighbour who does. RH
Ixworth Patients' Association
There is a talk on Wednesday 28 September at Ixworth Village
Hall, starting at 7.30pm, on Modern Approaches to Arthritis.
Dr Harpur, Ruth Slack, a Nurse Practitioner, and an expert
patient will provide information on the modern and highly
effective regimes now in use. Everyone is welcome! AT
5th November Bonfire Party
Once again we have been given permission from Euston Estate
to use the field behind the Village Hall for a bonfire and
fireworks party on Saturday 5th November. Combustible items
may be put on the bonfire from the 1st September, but PLEASE,
NO MATTRESSES. Any profits from this year's event will be
used to buy fireworks for next year.
Village Hall Diary & News
The 60th Anniversary of the End of World War II celebrations
start with The Big Band Night on Saturday 3rd September, 8.00pm
till midnight at the Village Hall. Tickets are free but must
be reserved for catering purposes at the Village Post Office
or at The Fox Inn on 269522. On Sunday 4th September the celebrations
for peacetime continue with 'A Family Street Party' from 1.00
to 5.00pm, in the Village Hall grounds, with wartime games,
music, balloon race and activities for all the family - reservations
for catering as above please. Dressing the part of the era
is optional but encouraged for both events. Please pop into
the Post Office to see the wartime memorabilia exhibition.
These events are supported by Home Front Recall, a division
of The Big Lottery Fund.
On Saturday 17th September it is the Village Show with a 'Dig
for Victory' theme. We are hoping to see plenty of entries
for this year's show, especially from the children. If you
have not had your programme delivered, please pick one up
from the Village Post Office or The Fox Inn.
The theme of Peace Time will be carried through to Armistice
Day on Sunday 13th November with a memorial to the War Dead
associated with the villages in All Saints Church, Honington.
Sean at The Fox will help to produce the Commonwealth War
Graves Commission certificate, available for all World War
I and II casualties from the Community Internet Facility based
at The Fox Inn. Please see future church notices for more
information. ST

Our garden meeting this year was held at the home of Dawn
Lees. Sixteen members enjoyed and thanked Dawn for hosting
the bring and share supper served with a delicious fruit punch.
Also shared during the evening were different hobbies and
pastimes. In September we will meet at the Village Hall on
Tuesday 13th at 7.30pm. New members and visitors are very
welcome to join us. Our speaker is Christine Clarke about
Film and TV make-up. The competition will be for a decorated
mask and the Roll Call is My Favourite Film. DA

Over Sixties Club
At our first meeting of last month, on the 4th, we all spent
an enjoyable afternoon with memories of the village of years
ago, helped by old photos, ancient deeds and documents and
yarns swapped with much laughter and happy chatter. A get-well
card was signed and sent with all our best wishes to Flossie
who is recuperating from a heart attack. We hope she will
be returning to our meetings again soon. We all enjoyed a
splendid homemade tea supplied by our committee and helpers
- our thanks to all who worked so hard. Our meeting on the
18th August at the village hall was, as always, good company
with our usual games being played. On the 1st September we
have a lunch at the Troston Bull to look forward to and our
usual meeting on the 15th will be in the Village Hall. KK

Church News
It is back to school again - so let's wish all the schoolchildren
and their teachers well as they begin a new school year. There
are lots of things happening in September - including of course
the Village Hall VE/VJ Day Event. The following weekend is
the Suffolk Historic Churches Annual Bike Ride (for those
of you who remember, last year I fell off and rather rearranged
my face - I am walking this year!!) This is on Saturday 10th
and Clair Smith is our local organiser - please contact her
for details. Sunday 11th is our Harvest Thanksgiving at Sapiston
Church at 6.00pm. We always have it on this weekend so that
cycling visitors can see the decorations on Saturday. On Monday
12th it is the Rural Pastimes Annual Meeting - a busy weekend!
Harvest Thanksgiving at Honington is on Sunday 25th at 9.15am
followed by a special Harvest Songs of Praise on Monday evening
at 6.30pm following by the annual Harvest Supper. Our speaker
this year will be the local writer who has recently published
the book 'Slightly on the Huh'. It should be a good evening
with wonderful food and good entertainment. Sally Fogden
