Euston Rural PasTimes Event
The rain did try to put an early dampener on the
day, which may have reduced the attendance, but
Trevor had a welcoming sign saying "Keep smiling,
it is not raining!" He, as always, did a fantastic
job in the carparking area with Sue (Happy Birthday
Sue!) After the normal traumas of getting exhibitors
in, helped by Chris Fogden and Jim Broatch, the
rain stopped in time for the Duchess to open the
event. The church looked stunning for the service
and the flower festival. We were blessed with the
cadets, to whom we are indebted, as well as to those
people who gave up their valuable time to make it
all work. Jim and the Euston Estate staff, as always,
set up the event and took down the signs and once
again excelled - we should always appreciate that
they also do farm rides on their day off. The RAF
contributed so much to the event, setting up the
tents, and providing the signs, displays etc. Sean
from The Fox sorted the bar very ably; the Senior
Fogdens worked like Trojans helped by Michael Stock
and Rob Williams; Fiona Ridgwell typed and organised
the printing of the programme; our new secretary
Jax Devonshire dealt with all the crises on the
day with a smile; and David Plampin counted all
night! We had more entries than ever before and
thank you to Tony Walden for all the cars! Finally,
we are delighted with the continuing support of
the Euston Estate, and particularly the ongoing
generosity of the Duke and Duchess of Grafton who
have allowed it all to happen. Jax commented that
any corporation would be proud of the co-operation
and goodwill of our team that makes Rural Pastimes
so special. Thank you all so much!
Giles Smith
A very big thank you, once again, for all the help
given in the Tea Tent at Rural Pastimes. In spite
of a very damp and cold start, we still managed
to make a profit of over £1,000 again this
year. We also did something we have never done before,
we ran out of cakes completely just after 3.00pm!!
This is a first that we don't want to repeat so
please can we urge you to be even more generous
with your cooking next year - anyone in the village
is welcome to help and make cakes, so nag everyone
you know! This is in no way a criticism of any of
the helpers, only an observation for next year,
so all give yourselves a pat on the back and please
come along again next year to help us make another
wonderful total for the Hospice and local churches.

RAF Honington
Just to let you know that the Inter-Service and
National Gliding Championships take place during
the period 18th to 31st July at RAF Honington. There
will be upwards of 100 gliders, 20 or more towing
aircraft and as many as 300 people on the site during
this period. The gliding activity will be nationwide,
but hopefully the impact locally will be minimal.
Most of the competitors will be entering through
Crash Gate 3 on the 22nd July and departing on the
31st July. ST
Neighbourhood Watch
If you see anything (however small) that you think
is unusual or suspicious, take a note of any numbers
you can see, including the make and colour of any
vehicle and phone me on 268165 - don't wait until
the next day do it immediately. If I am not available
telephone the Duty Officer on 01284 774100 and give
him the information. Immediate action is import
- if you have suspicions tell the Police. Confidence
Tricksters are in our area again. Don't be taken
in by smooth talk or appearances and don't answer
any questions, no matter what they promise. If it
sounds too good to be true, it usually is. The police
are looking for an H reg, dull metallic blue Vauxhall
Cavalier with rusting wheel arches. The occupants
were a woman in her early 20s with shoulder length
blonde hair and a man of the same age with dark
hair. If you can help with these people or vehicle,
please ring me.
Marilyn Williams, 268165.

The town of Bury and some of its colourful characters
of the past were 'brought to life' at our June meeting.
Mr Brian Coley, a Blue Badge guide, explained how,
after retirement, he studied for twelve months to
obtain his Blue Badge. We viewed slides of locations
in Bury and heard about the people that had lived
there, and the intrigue, plots, murders and romantic
affairs that took place in their lives many years
ago. Fiona Ridgwell also gave an excellent report
from the National Federation of WI's Annual General
Meeting at the Albert Hall in London. Our next meeting
on July 12th includes our speaker Meg Brown on 'American
and British Patchwork Quilts', a competition to
make a small patchwork item and the Roll Call, which
is 'Name an American State'. Visitors are always
welcome. DA
WI Celebration Supper
Once again, Avery and John Triggs have kindly offered
to provide a supper for members and friends on Saturday
2nd July at 7.30pm. This year the theme is Celebrations,
as the WI movement is 90 years old, the Suffolk
West WI Federation is 85, and it is 60 years since
the end of World War II. The usual excellent supper
will be provided with a glass of wine, together
with competitions and interesting displays to keep
guests occupied! If you would like to come along
please telephone Avery Triggs on 269613, Doreen
Avenell on 269527, or Margaret Ridgwell on 01842
763180 to book your place as soon as possible. Tickets
are £6.00. MR
Honington Church Draw
In the June Draw, first prize went to Mr & Mrs
A Moore, second prize to Mr & Mrs Voss and third
prize to Mr & Mrs Bray. The next Draw will take
place at the Over Sixties Meeting on Thursday 21st
July. MC
Carpet Bowls Club
The club held their Annual Meeting on the 25th May.
John Byford retired as Secretary and he was thanked
for all the hard work he has undertaken for the
Club. Eric Martin will be taking over as Secretary
for the coming year. We have had a successful year
in the Bury Carpet Bowls League (East) finishing
in third place - the highest we have been. Some
of our members played in the Horringer Bowls Club
Charity Event when they won the first round of three
games then losing in the semi-final. We were also
represented at the Bury Carpet Bowls League Finals
Day held at King Edward Sixth School when Ken and
Joan Nicholas got through to the semi-final in the
Pairs competition. Fred and Kit Lilley, Margaret
Price and Percy Rose also played in the Fours competition.
In our own competitions last year John Sutton won
the summer competition. The Autumn Pairs Knock-out
Competition was won by Eric Martin and Flossie Harris,
with Ken Nicholas and Rita King as runners-up. The
singles trophy was won by Josie Goddard and runner
up was Ken Nicholas. We were pleased to welcome
one new member recently - Brian Gaught from Troston.
The Club meets every Wednesday at 7.30pm in the
Village Hall and visitors and new members are always
welcome. JG
Over Sixties Club
There were two meetings in June which, as usual,
were good company and entertaining. Sandwiched between
was the enjoyable coffee morning, hosted by Syd
Thurlow, which was well supported and the bring
and buy stall was a great success. Our thanks to
Syd for his hospitality and to all who were able
to attend. We have two meetings in July, a trip
to the Dun Cow, Bardwell, for lunch on the 7th and
at the Village Hall on the 21st. KK

come along if you can.
Church News
What a busy month this has been! Euston Rural Pastimes
kept us all busy for the first half of the month
- what a really great day it was. The crowds came,
the events were good and the displays outstanding.
The Flower Festival was really superb (that word
hardly does justice to it) with memories of the
coming of peace 60 years ago - the theme was 'They
shall beat their swords into ploughshares . . .).
The Service at the heart of the event was, as always,
a joy as there is something rather wonderful about
the space at the heart of the whirl of the event.
The really beautiful cake that Linda Howe made to
go along with the flower festival was so clever
and has been donated by the winner to Honington
School. Congratulations to all the team headed up
by Giles and special congratulations to Jax in her
first year as Secretary.
Now we move on - this month sees the celebrations
for 60 years since VE/VJ day - and there will be
a special service on July 10th so if you have any
photos or newspapers of the time, old cookery books,
etc. could we possibly borrow them for a display
in the church (maybe we could photocopy the originals
to keep them safe)?
This is also the month when our new Cathedral Tower
is dedicated after all these years of work - quite
something in this century to have a cathedral completed.
