Honington
& Sapiston Newsletter, February 2006. 420.
As you will know, Canon
Sally Fogden will be retiring at the end of February and we
will be holding a retirement party for her at Sapiston Village
Hall on Thursday 2nd March at 7.30pm. Enclosed with this Newsletter
is information regarding this event which we trust is self-explanatory,
but should you have any queries please contact Marion Cusworth
on 01359 269492 or Gill Farrow on 01842 763660. GF
Honington & Sapiston Parish Plan
This is the second update since the Parish Plan was issued
in 2003 and details the actions taken during 2005.
1) Transport
We continue to work with other agencies including the Parish
and County Council particularly with regard to the A1088.
During the year improved road surfacing has been provided
on either side of the cross roads and later during 2006 improved
signing is to be introduced on the A1088 itself in a further
attempt to reduce speeding through the village.
2) Good Neighbour Scheme.
This was launched at an over 60s meeting in the spring and
is now up and running with all the necessary volunteers in
place. There have been limited requests for assistance so
far but any resident who does require help should contact
Marilyn Williams on 268165
3) Welcome Pack
This was issued to all residents during the year and will
be provided in future to all people moving into our parishes.
4) Housing
The group would like to thank everyone who participated in
the Housing Needs Survey which clearly identified the need
for affordable housing in our community. A meeting with Suffolk
Acre, St Edmundsbury BC and the relevant Housing providers
is to be established shortly in order to ascertain how we
can move this matter forward.
5) Late Night Transport
We continue to work with St Edmundsbury BC to provide a late
night bus service into Bury St. Edmunds on at least one evening
at weekends. So far potential sources of finance have been
identified and it is hoped to provide a service on a trial
basis later in the year.
6) Post Office
With the retirement of the current sub postmaster plans are
well advanced to transfer the service into the building adjacent
to the Fox Inn. At the same time it is hoped to transfer one
of the two computer terminals currently in the Fox to the
new Post Office.
7) Youth Provision
We have been working with Lin Kennedy the Community Development
Worker from RAF Honington to find ways of providing activities
for young people and these have already included outings and
training courses. Lin continues to look for other initiatives
that will benefit the young people of both the camp and villages.
In addition the Fox is currently sponsoring two under-10 football
teams who play at the RAF station.
You will see from this update that we have addressed many
of the issues identified in the Parish Plan. However, there
are still a few areas in the Plan that we have yet to deal
with and we would welcome more people to work with the Parish
Plan group. We meet quarterly and you can chose to be part
of the whole group or to work on individual projects.
If you would like to get involved please contact Terry Taylor
269292 or Robin Howe 269701. RH
Village Post Office
We are on schedule for the Post Office opening on Monday 27th
February at 9.00am. Trading hours will be Monday to Friday
9.00am to 5.00pm. There will be no lunchtime interruption
in service. Malting Row Branch closes 1.00pm on Wednesday
22nd February. ST
Over Sixties Club
Our meeting on the 5th January was rather down on numbers
as several of our members were unable to attend due to colds
and other health problems. However, we rallied round and managed
two tables of card players and the rest of us played bingo,
followed by tea, cakes and our usual draw. Our best wishes
for a speedy return to good health to those unable to be with
us - we missed your company. Our meeting on the 19th was still
down on numbers but enjoyable to those of us able to be there.
We are having a club lunch on the 2nd February at The Fox,
Honington, commencing at 12.30pm for 1.00pm. Anyone who was
not at our last meeting and who wishes to join us, please
contact Marion Cusworth on 269492. KK
Carpet Bowls Club
The Christmas Dinner held on Monday 19th December was enjoyed
by all those attending. After the meal the presentation of
the trophies to the winners of our own competitions took place:
the Summer Competition was won by Ken Nicholas with John Sutton
runner-up; the Autumn Pairs Knockout Competition was won by
John Sutton and Brian Gaught, with Kitty Lilley and Jenny
Phillips runners-up; the Singles Trophy was won by John Sutton
with Muriel Parsons runner-up. The proceeds from the raffle
held on the night were given to Ixworth Surgery. The Club
meets every Wednesday at 7.30pm in the Village Hall where
visitors and new members are always welcome. JG

Our first meeting of the New Year was presided over by new
president, Patricia Fojut, assisted by secretary, Jo Lynch.
The meeting commenced with the singing of Jerusalem led by
our Suffolk West WI Choir members. Congratulations go to Louise
Homer who has had a hip replacement operation without missing
any WI monthly meetings! Our guest speakers were Mr &
Mrs Knock who came dressed in brightly coloured waistcoats
to show us their extensive collection of traditional toys.
At next month's meeting, on Tuesday 14th February, the speaker
will be Mr Horry Parsons telling us about the building of
the St Edmundsbury Cathedral Tower. The competition is to
design a stained glass window on a postcard. The roll call
is to name a Cathedral. DA

We would like to thank the Carpet Bowls Club for rearranging
their match allowing us to host a Burns Night Celebration
for the Tank Regiment at RAF Honington. The event was very

Tools With A Mission
On 13th January I took a second car full of tools to Tools
With A Mission in Ipswich. They were unbelievably grateful
as normally people's "giving" dries up at this time
of year. Their Chairman, Bill Dewhurst, writes: "For
the past 20 years TWAM has been engaged in sending hundreds
of tonnes of sustainable aid to help the people of the emerging
nations and other needy areas. Our shipments have brought
hope to many. The gift of tools has helped many along the
road to self-respect and provided the means for them to buy
food for their families. Thanks to all of you for your contributions
to the work." Wendy Evans
Honington Church Draw
The January Draw took place during the Over Sixties meeting.
First prize went to Cathy Hargreaves, second prize to Harvey
Harris and third prize to Winifred Brewitt. The next draw
will be on the 16th February. MC
Bernard Balaam
The number of people at Bernard's Funeral was a tribute to
this well-loved figure who meant so much in our villages.
There are many memories of him and Carol has some wonderful
photographs that everyone was poring over after the funeral.
Honington is the richer for having known him and Cath and
the poorer for his passing. SF
Church News
This is quite hard to write as it is the last time I shall
write as your Vicar as I retire at the end of February and
my last Sunday in that capacity will be Sunday 26th February.
It has been the greatest privilege to be Vicar here and I
would like to thank you all for the support you have given
to us as a family. You have lived through a bit of church
history in that I came here as a deaconess and you have seen
me through being a deacon, a priest and a canon - the last
three were not possible when we came 21 years ago.
We will be living at Meadow Farm, Sapiston so not going very
far away and Tim and I look forward to continuing as part
of the community - as a retired priest I shall be taking some
services at the invitation of the Churchwardens and the Team
Rector (Philip Oliver at Ixworth Vicarage). How long it will
be before a successor is appointed we don't yet know. Anyway,
Thank You All and God Bless You.
PS. We are both continuing with various activities including
The Rural Pastimes Event!!! Sally Fogden
