Honington & Sapiston Newsletter, August 2005. 414:

Parish Council
At last month's Parish Council meeting Councillors agreed to fund the cost of the Welcome leaflet, a copy of which you have received with this Newsletter. You will find more information about this below. Councillors congratulated those responsible for such an informative document. They also welcomed the new Youth Activity Evenings which will be taking place on the RAF base. The Community Development Officer, Lyn Kennedy, will be giving us more information about this scheme in next month's Newsletter, so watch out for details. The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place on the 19th September at 7.30pm in Honington School Hall. LP

Welcome Leaflet
Every house should be receiving a Welcome Letter with this Newsletter. It is primarily to help newcomers to the villages but should also be of use to everyone as the back page contains emergency information. Please let me know if you have a new neighbour in your vicinity or if you would like a copy in large print, or know of a neighbour or relative who needs one, please ring and I will deliver one. Rob Williams, 268165

5th November Bonfire Party
Once again we have been given permission from Euston Estate to use the field behind the Village Hall for a bonfire and fireworks party on Saturday 5th November. Combustible items may be put on the bonfire from the 1st September, but PLEASE, NO MATTRESSES. Any profits from this year's event will be used to buy fireworks for next year.

Neighbourhood Watch
Distraction burglary and opportunist thefts are both things to be aware of in the summer. The latest scam for distraction burglary is Water Board Officials claiming there is a problem along the street and they need to check all the houses. Always check identification and be aware that most organisations only send one person. If there are two or more tell them to come back another time then phone Ixworth Police on 01284 774222, or dial 999. Opportunist thieves will take advantage of an open window or items left unguarded outside. If you would like a shed alarm for £8 call me on 268165. Our vigilance may help to solve or even stop a crime. Marilyn Williams, 268165.

Village Hall Diary & News
Don't forget the Committee Meeting on the 2nd August at 7.30pm in The Fox Inn Lounge Bar. There are important issues to discuss so please all try and make it.
It is time to start preparing your exhibits for The Village Show on the 17th September. There will be categories for both adults and children and we will be looking for plenty of entries. The programme will be on your doormat soon!
End of War 60th Anniversary Celebrations Garden Party and Big Band Dance on Saturday 3rd September. The Committee have applied for funding to stage these events and final details are not quite complete yet but watch out for posters around the villages. The Committee are intending to hold an exhibition so if anyone with any wartime memorabilia and photographs of the time suitable for showing would consider lending them, please drop them into The Fox Inn - it would be much appreciated. ST

Transport to Bury
Is there a need for transport to Bury on Friday and Saturday evenings, particularly for teenagers? If it was available would it be used and by how many? If you are interested in using such a service or helping to organise it, please telephone me. Rob Williams, 268165

W.I.
Celebrations! This was the theme of our splendid supper held at the home of Avery and John Triggs. Members and guests also enjoyed a look at photos, scrapbooks and records of our WI stretching back to the 1940's and some poignant wartime memorabilia. A quiz and raffle concluded a really enjoyable evening.
At our meeting in July, Meg Browne delighted members and 3 visitors with her collection of patchwork quilts. Some she had made herself and others, dating back to the 1920's, she had been able to obtain from the USA. Her collection gave us a real insight into the history of the patterns and fabrics used throughout the years.
Our August meeting, on the 9th August, will be held at Richmond House, Ixworth Road, Honington, home of Dawn Lees, at the earlier time of 7.00pm. DA

Good Neighbours
This scheme is to benefit people of all ages in our two villages. Phone us if you need help with any task, large or small. The number is 07950 930981. MW

Over Sixties Club
Twenty-two members visited the Dun Cow at Bardwell on the 7th July where we all enjoyed a splendid roast beef lunch followed by a choice of pudding. Alan, our host, donated a bottle of wine for our draw, which was followed by games of bingo. We are so fortunate to have the choice of so many excellent venues for our pub lunches in our local area. On the 21st July we met as usual in the Village Hall and on the 4th August we have our special tea and reminiscing afternoon, which is always entertaining and much enjoyed by us all. Our meeting on the 18th August will be in the Village Hall at 2.30pm. KK

The Fox Inn News
We are delighted to announce that Paul & Dee Thomas and their son Buddy, along with their St Barnard, Mollie, have joined us at The Fox. They arrive having previously run a successful Village Inn in Dolton, North Devon. Dee brings with her a pedigree of home cooking and will soon be extending the menu. The kitchen is now open from midday to 8.00pm seven days a week. We will also be extending our outside bar provision and the event organising and function hosting side of the business. Paul and Buddy are both pool players and are keen to promote the pool teams, competitions and the Sunday evening pool knockout. Mollie has quickly established herself as a celebrity and seems to be thriving on all the attention.
We are sorry to announce that Lisa is leaving us as Gary has been posted to RAF Bovington. We are having a BBQ and garden party as a bit of a send off for them and their boys on Sunday 7th August when there will also be a prize draw with the proceeds going to the Honington Foxes Under 12's Junior Football Team. All are welcome.
On August Bank Holiday Sunday, 28th August, we are again holding the Brian Bird Memorial Trophy Pool Competition with a BBQ, garden party, stalls and charity auction. All proceeds will be going to the St Nicholas Hospice. Please register to play in the competition at the bar - fee £3.00. Play starts at 2.00pm. All community organisations in the locality are invited to hold a stall - please contact Sean or Ian on 269522. ST

Honington Church Draw
In the July Draw, first prize went to Mr & Mrs A Moore, second prize to Mrs Juliet Morley and third prize to Mrs Joyce Kemp. The next Draw will take place at the Over Sixties Meeting on Thursday 18th August. MC

Church News
Thank you everyone who contributed to our Church Fete in any way - it was a lovely afternoon - a real village fete with people enjoying first of all the BBQ and then the lovely strawberry teas, taking part in the games and buying from the stalls. We are grateful to be able to use the playing field at our school and for the help we are always given.
It was a great delight to welcome the Wymondham Abbey Choir to sing evensong at Sapiston Church - it was so good to hear this splendid choir in that lovely setting and to enjoy a picnic in the barn at Foxborough House - thank you Giles and Clair.
Some of us were privileged to be at the dedication of the newly-built tower of St Edmundsbury Cathedral - a truly memorable and once in a lifetime occasion, as it must be a long time since a cathedral tower was last completed!
It's a holiday month for the children, but time can begin to hang heavily as the month goes on, so look out for various activities on offer in the last week of the month - a picnic and balloon race for the younger ones; a children's challenge for the older ones; and, if there is enough interest, a "play in a day" for all ages. I need to know if you are interested or would like to help, so please ring me on 269265 for more details.
Don't forget the Sponsored Bike Ride on the 10th September - details from Clair Smith. Sally Fogden
